Conversation 2 Zorigt: Sorry, Dr. Ganaa, what’s a “consonant sound”? Dr. Ganaa: Well, it’s a sound like [b], [k], [t] or [tj] Part of your mouth helps to make it. Zorigt: And... what’s a “vowel sound”? Dr.Ganaa: It’s a sound like aaa or ooo. The air goes through your mouth but it doesn’t touch anywhere. Zorigt: Could you give us an example? Dr.Ganaa: Okay. Let’s take the word cat. [k] is a consonant, [ae] is a vowel and [t] is another consonant. [k], [ae], [t]. Put them together and you get cat. Zorigt: Thank you, Miss Lee. Conversation 3 Baigalmaa: Excuse me, Dr. Ganaa, but what does great mean? Dr.Ganaa: It means very good, wonderful. Baigalmaa: Uh huh. Dr.Ganaa: You’re happy. How do you feel? Baigalmaa: Happy. ASPECTS OF CONNECTED SPEECH
Lesson 1. Mixed Sounds Sometimes when two consonant sounds come together, one at the end of one word and one at the beginning of the next, they mix and make a new sound. [d-j] -> [_____] [t-j] -> [_____] would you -> [_____] that you -> [_____] could you -> [_____] catch you -> [_____] did you -> [_____] about you -> [_____]
Listen to the dialogue. Circle where you hear mixed sounds. A: Could you play that again, please? B: Alright. Would you like to hear it all, or just the last bit? A: Just the last bit is okay... (TAPE) Thank you. B: No problem. Did you get it all? A: Well no. They speak so fast! How do you keep up? Could you slow it down? B: That’d be difficult ‘cause it’d s-o-u-n-d 1-i-k-e t-h-i-s.
